Montana
I finished butchering elk last night , and now I can get back to some prospecting once this nasty cold front gets out of here tomorrow . A week away from it is a nice break , but I'm eager to here the beep of the detector again. I have the freezer full of great fish and game and I'm all set for the winter low fat diet. ----Bob

Way to go Bob. I did a little prospecting in Montana and then some bird hunting in SD this fall. Basically froze my butt but I too have some wild game in the freezer. I'm over at the Cargo Muchachos now and very happy to be back in the lower deserts.

Your the Man Bob, Sounds like your hunt went just the same as the last one. It always helps to have a fully stocked freezer
for the winter.. Glad to hear your back from your vacation and ready to do some beepin.. Hope to see you in the hills ..Joe

Wheee Doggie!!! That's a mess of vittles Montana Bob! I've never seen an Elk but have seen a few mounts. Those suckers are HUGE! Can't imagine packing that baby out on foot. Thank goodness for ATV's I guess. How's Elk meat taste? Something like Venison?

I also read the thread about the Elk moving into areas that were not traditionally Elk grounds. Is the population growing or just moving?

Good going on bagging that Elk!
Montana
Gaine. We got lucky this year . Got this one out on a flat area and drove the truck right to it. With the poor monsoon , the elk in that area have to leave the mountains and go to watertroughs that the ranchers have out in the prairies for the cattle. Without these watertroughs, many places in the west wouldn't have any elk which require water on a daily basis. We had to use a comealong to hoist it into the truck bed. The elk are spreading like wildfire all over the western states even into desert areas in some places. Where my daughter lives in Montana they let you shoot either *FILTERED* the last 2 weeks of the season just to try to control the population. In northern Arizona it's very dangerous to drive fast at night . An elk will total any car easily. I saw many dead elk on the road shoulders on my way over to Aarons house to go hunting. Great for the tow truck drivers in the area. ----Bob
